SPCNM 2025 Scholarships

The College is offering three Annette Huang Scholarships in 2025 to Bachelor of Natural Medicine students.

Annette Huang was the SPCNM College Librarian from 2004 to 2012 and left a bequest to the College on her passing in 2022. She requested that this gift is “used towards a scholarship for students to attend the College.”

1. Harakeke Scholarship – Resilience and Perseverance

The Harakeke scholarship supports a student who has faced or is currently facing significant personal, financial, or health-related challenges during their studies and has shown resilience in continuing their education.

Harakeke symbolises whanau and the cycle of life.
Note – The harakeke photo in the first clinic room was taken by Annette Huang and presented to the college as a leaving gift.

The monetary value of this scholarship is $2000.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be in their second or third year of study at the College.
  • Has faced, or is facing personal hardship, such as financial difficulty, health challenges, family responsibilities, or other significant barriers.
  • Demonstrated perseverance, commitment, and motivation to succeed in their studies.
  • Maintains a satisfactory academic record and engagement with coursework.

Application Requirements:

  • A personal statement (500 words) describing the challenges faced, how they were overcome, and how this experience has contributed to resilience and personal growth.
  • Optional: Supporting documentation (e.g., evidence of financial hardship, or medical statement).

Application process:

  • Applications will be anonymised and presented to a sub-committee of the SPCNM Board of Directors (the selection panel).
  • The BoD sub-committee will select a recipient for the award from the applications received.
  • A member of the sub-committee will notify College Management, who will notify both successful and unsuccessful recipients.
  • The decision of the selection panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

2.  Totara Scholarship – Academic Excellence

This scholarship recognises a student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in their naturopathy and herbal medicine studies (BNatMed).

Totara symbolises strength.

The monetary value of this scholarship is $2000.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be in their second or third year of study with a strong academic record (minimum GPA of 7.0 or equivalent).
  • Evidence of dedication to learning, critical thinking, and application of knowledge.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and commitment to ethical practice.
  • Active participation in academic and extracurricular activities related to natural medicine.

Application Requirements:

  • Official academic transcript and evidence of academic achievements.
  • A short essay (500 words) reflecting on the student’s academic journey, learning experiences, and future goals in natural medicine.

Application Process

  • Applications will be anonymised and presented to a sub-committee of the SPCNM Board of Directors (the selection panel).
  • The BoD sub-committee will select a recipient for the award from the applications received.

3.  Kawakawa Scholarship – Te Ara Whakapakari Scholarship (For a Māori student demonstrating leadership and contribution)

This scholarship is awarded to a Māori student who has demonstrated leadership, community engagement, and a commitment to the values of natural medicine.

The monetary value of this scholarship is $2000.

Eligibility Criteria:

The applicant must:

  • Identify as Māori and be in their second or third year of study.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, such as contributing to the College community, or promoting Māori health and well-being.
  • Show active involvement in whānau, hapū, or iwi initiatives, or engagement with kaupapa Māori in the field of natural medicine.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to holistic health and the promotion of Māori perspectives in naturopathy and herbal medicine.
  • Have a satisfactory academic record and evidence of professional conduct.

Application Requirements:

  • A personal statement (500 words) detailing leadership contributions, community involvement, and aspirations in natural medicine.
  • A letter of recommendation from a mentor, or community leader supporting the applicant’s contributions and leadership.

Application Process:

  • Applications will be anonymised and presented to a sub-committee of the SPCNM Board of Directors (the selection panel).
  • The BoD sub-committee will select a recipient for the award from the applications received.
  • A member of the sub-committee will notify College Management, who will notify both successful and unsuccessful recipients.
  • The decision of the selection panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
