NZ Diploma in Holistic Nutrition is:
- A NZQA recognised qualification that will allow you to practice as a Clinical Nutritionist on graduation.
- Recognised by the Clinical Nutrition Association which will allow you to apply for membership with them.
- A 240 credit, two-year full-time course with a choice to either study on-campus or online for the first 3 semesters. The clinical courses in the latter part of 2nd year will be delivered on campus at our Auckland premises. The clinical courses are fully supervised by practising clinical nutritionists to ensure that you are confident in running your own practice safely and effectively on graduation.
There is currently no provision to offer this programme part-time.
Study requires 16 hours class attendance per week (either online or on campus) plus at least an equivalent 16 – 20 hours of self-directed learning.
The purpose of this qualification is to provide advisors who can apply holistic knowledge of nutrition to assist people in the PREVENTION of health issues; to design and deliver holistic nutrition care programmes that contribute to people’s wellbeing by addressing nutritional and lifestyle health. Please note this qualification is not about treating health conditions but will provide you with the knowledge and skills to evaluate, educate, collaborate and contribute to the health and wellbeing of clients and your community.
1. What makes this course stand out from other nutrition courses?
- On campus clinical practicum that is fully supervised by practising clinical nutritionists who are experts in their field. This is by far the most rewarding and beneficial experience for students, and will set you up for success when you graduate.
- Community Practice course which will teach you how to identify the needs of specific community groups including Māori, Pasifika, older adults and children and those with specific health conditions, and to design appropriate nutritional programmes including cooking classes.
2. Education Pathways
- You will be able to undertake higher education in nutrition.
- You will be able to continue with your studies at SPCNM and gain a Bachelor of Natural Medicine.
- You will be able to gain microcredentials in health coaching and/or sports nutrition via the Holistic Performance Institute.
3. Employment Pathways
You will be able to work:
- As a clinical nutritionist and are able to join the Clinical Nutrition Association (CNA).
- In allied health clinics, collaborating with other health professionals and providing nutritional advice.
- In food and nutrition companies, supplement manufacturing industries, food service industries, pharmacies and health food shops, gyms, organisations such as schools, kindergartens, retirement villages, condition related and community based organisations.
4. Content of Diploma
Includes:
- Holistic understanding of human nutrition and individual needs including age and life stage, activity level, health status, dietary restrictions, ethnic backgrounds and personal goals.
- Historical knowledge, cultural and socioeconomic patterns related to nutrition, modern dietary trends and evidence-based practice.
- Anatomy & physiology, biochemistry of foods (macro and micronutrients), pathophysiology and the latest research on the gut microbiome and functional testing.
- Communication skills (including Behaviour Change, Community Practice and Clinical Practicum.
